Navigating Care Options

Mt. Hood Hospice we provide expert pain and symptom management and end-of-life care to anyone facing a terminal illness.

Dealing with a Terminal Illness Diagnosis

Deciding what to do after a terminal illness diagnosis is never easy. You may feel powerless, overwhelmed, sad, or angry. You know you should have so many questions, but are not sure where to begin. It may take some time to adjust to the diagnosis, but knowing your choices and options can help relieve anxiety for you and your family. Consider the following questions before having a conversation about your care options:

  • What do you value most about your life now?
  • Hospice is about symptom control and pain management – is that what you are wanting?
  • Are you ready to stop curative treatments if they have been unsuccessful?
  • Do you want your care to be managed at home?
  • What do you hope for most regarding your death or the death of a loved one?

If a conversation with your healthcare provider about your treatment and care options does not happen immediately after your diagnosis, consider initiating the conversation yourself. If your provider does not discuss alternatives to curative treatments, make sure to ask questions.

At Mt. Hood Hospice we provide expert pain and symptom management and end-of-life care to anyone facing a terminal illness. We also offer support for those who love them. From the time of your diagnosis, Mt. Hood Hospice can help you and your loved ones make informed decisions and assist with adjusting to change by providing you with an understanding of what to expect in the future.

About Mt. Hood Hospice

Mt. Hood Hospice has been providing care and bereavement support to families in Multnomah and Clackamas Counties for 43 years. We are a not-for-profit, free standing, independent, community-based hospice.

Mt. Hood Hospice was the first free-standing hospice in Oregon to be granted Medicare certification in 1987. Since that time we have stayed current in compliance with changing CMS regulations while remaining true to our original ideal: to provide the highest quality care to families coping with life-limiting illness, emphasizing comfort, dignity and choice.
